The building is located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which is visited by many people from Japan and abroad. It was designed by architect Kenzo Tange. The simple, unadorned design known as "modernism" was the most advanced in the world in the 1950s, and was one of the first works of postwar Japanese architecture to receive worldwide acclaim. Despite its simplicity, the building has many highlights, such as the idea of using the piloti (open space on the first floor) as a park gate for the entire building, and the dimensions of each part given a mathematical regularity.
