This church is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the atomic bombing and to the realization of world peace. It is 57 m long with a petal-shaped drum on the east end and a 45 m high bell tower on the northwest side. The plan form is a three-corridor basilica. It is a pioneering architecture of postwar reconstruction in the A-bombed city of Hiroshima, with an excellent overall composition and quantitative proportions, including the cathedral and tower. With its Japanese character and the solemnity of a memorial building, it is highly regarded as a religious building of the new era, and is famous as the starting point of Togo Murano's postwar work.
