Jodoji Temple is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, and has a particularly long history in the Bingo region. The main hall and other structures that remain today were reconstructed during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), indicating that Onomichi had great economic power at that time. The main temple building follows the esoteric Buddhism main hall style and is known as a representative example of eclectic architecture along with Myoo-in Temple in Fukuyama, and is designated as a national treasure. The Amida Hall, which stands to the east of the main hall, is said to have been rebuilt in 1345 during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and is regarded as an outstanding example of Japanese-style architecture. The present buildings, the medieval buildings were donated by Doren and Dosei, a wealthy merchant from Onomichi, and the pagoda is one of the three most famous pagodas in Japan (Ishiyama-ji Temple and Koyasan Kongo-samai-in).[The main temple building is a National Treasure.]
