It is one of the representative buildings of Tomonoura, where the old townscape still remains. It was built as the residence of the Nakamura family, which manufactured Homeishu (sake), and was later acquired by the Ota family and is now open to the public. The site is large, surrounded on all sides by roads, and in addition to the main house, there are attached buildings and storehouses. The fine design of the latticework, beautiful plasterwork, and thick, magnificent beams make it the largest and best quality merchant house of the Edo period in the prefecture, and it is a reminder of Tomonoura's prosperity.
