Miyajima has been considered sacred since ancient times, and Itsukushima Shrine was revered as the god of maritime protection. The present building is based on a reconstruction in 1241, but follows the configuration of the late Heian period, when it was prepared under the generous patronage of Taira no Kiyomori. The main hall in the south and the main hall of the Hakusha Shrine in the east are built in the Ryoryu-zukuri style, and the worship hall, purification hall, and other buildings are connected by corridors, reminiscent of a mansion built in the shinden-zukuri style.
The bold concept of building a wooden structure on the sea, the wisdom of predecessors in maintaining it, and the traces of expansion in each period are among the many attractions of this site.
