It is one of the largest art museums in western Japan in terms of both scale and content. The museum houses and exhibits approximately 5,000 works, including works by Hiroshima-related painters, art from the 1920s and 1930s, and crafts from Japan and other Asian countries.
The design of the museum is characterized by its harmony with the adjacent Shukkei-en Garden, a lobby space with large windows and an atrium, as well as a restaurant and spaces throughout the building that offer views of the garden's greenery.
