This temple building stands by the Ashida River in Fukuyama City. The main hall was built in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and has a gabled roof. The style is called eclectic, and is a rare fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Tenjusshu styles. In particular, the arched, rim-taraki ceiling in the inner sanctum is the only surviving example from the medieval period. The five-story pagoda was built in the Nanbokucho Period and is the fifth oldest five-story pagoda in Japan. It is a historically important building that foreshadows the connection between Kusado Sengen, a medieval town which once flourished along the Ashida River, and the continent.
