Hiroshima Castle, also called Koijo or Zaima Castle, is a typical flat castle built by Terumoto Mori on a delta at the mouth of the Ota River, which took about two years to complete from 1589. The original castle tower was designated as a former national treasure in 1931, but was destroyed by the atomic bombing. Its exterior was restored through reinforced concrete construction in 1958. The Ninomaru area has also been partially restored.
