This housing complex was developed privately in the early Showa period. In Kure, where there is little flat land, suitable sites for housing are scarce, and in order to meet the housing needs of naval personnel, housing lots were developed on steep, cliff-like slopes.
In particular, in the Ryoujo area, known for the "Two Hundred Steps of Ryoujo," there remains a cluster of houses built on top of magnificent stone walls. Some of them are a combination of Japanese and Western-style buildings, a style that was popular at the time, and they have survived the war and still retain the appearance of the past.
The NPO Kuremachi Revival Vision is renovating houses in this area as lodging facilities and renting them out to its members as ishidan-no-ie or "the stone step houses."
