It is a rare example of an Edo period mansion building in Kure, where the urban area was rapidly developed after the port became a military port in the Meiji period. The Sawahara family, whose family name was Sawada-ya, was a merchant family that held important positions such as village headman. The buildings are located on the east and west sides of the street, with the main building on the east side and a shoin-style front room that served as a resting place for the feudal lord. The three storehouses on the west side are unique in that they are literally three earthen storehouses in a row, creating a distinctive landscape that symbolizes the history of Kure.
The museum is open for tours only six times a year (March, April, May, September, October, and November).
