It is a typical merchant house built in Takehara, a town known for its historical townscape, and it is now open to the public. The Matsusaka family, whose trade name was Sawada-ya, ran a diversified business centering on the wholesaling of firewood and coal.
The main building, with a gabled, flat roof, is located on the street side, while another building is parallel to the main building on the rear side, and the tsunoya connects the two, making a total of three buildings. Externally, the main building has characteristics including a wavy teri-mukuri tile roof, a latticework mushikomado window, and a highly decorative dekkoshi (latticed bay window) on the first floor. It is an eye-catching and elegant example of merchant house architecture in Takehara.
Fumyokaku, the symbol of Takehara is visible from the garden of the Matsusaka Residence, also giving it a special charm.
