This is the former residence of a wealthy farmer that remains on a small hill in the center of Mukojima. The Yoshihara family is said to have samurai ancestry and served as village headman for generations during the Edo period.
In the center of the site stands the thatched main house facing east, with a barn to the north. The main house has an earthen floor on the northern one-third of the building, and 10 rooms of various sizes are arranged in two rows to the south. It is very rare to find a private residence known to have been built in the early Edo period, and is said to be "the oldest existing farmhouse in Japan".
