What is the Citizens Council for the Hiroshima Summit?

The Citizens Council for the Hiroshima Summit is a joint public-private organization consisting of Hiroshima Prefecture, the City of Hiroshima, and related organizations in various fields, such as economy, transportation, and medical care.
For the G7 Hiroshima Summit (Summit of Major Industrialized Nations) to be held in May 2023, many people will visit Hiroshima, including leaders and government officials of major countries steering the world’s politics and economy, as well as domestic and foreign media. Through the G7 Summit, the  Citizens Council for the Hiroshima Summit aims to make those visitors feel glad to have come to Hiroshima. We will strive to host the Hiroshima Summit in such a way that all the people involved will be happy.

To that end, we will implement prefecture-wide initiatives based on five pillars: ‘Supporting the operation of the Summit,’ ‘Hospitality,’ ‘Disseminating information about peace,’ ‘Communicating the appeal of Hiroshima,’ and ‘Promoting youth participation in events leading to post-summit activities.’

Basic Project Implementation Policy of Citizens Council for the Hiroshima Summit

1. Basic concept

These days, as the situation in Ukraine is becoming increasingly tense, concerns are rising over the risk of the use of nuclear weapons, and anxiety is spreading around the world that the survival of mankind may be at risk. Under such circumstances, the fact that Hiroshima was chosen as a venue for dialogue (between the G7 nations) that aims to achieve world peace and sustainable development indicates that Hiroshima’s ability to convey its message as an international city of peace and culture has been highly evaluated. In this light, we need to make efforts to increase momentum toward the realization of a truly peaceful world free of nuclear weapons by sending a powerful message of peace to the world.

Meanwhile, the G7 Summit will attract much attention of the people around the world, making it a perfect opportunity to spread the appeal of Hiroshima to the world.

Accordingly, we must communicate a wide variety of information globally on the appeal of Hiroshima, not only the two World Heritage sites but also the flourishing industries that have supported our development, rich nature, diverse and delicious food assets of the mountains and seas, and culture and lifestyles that have been woven through history. Through such efforts, we need to attract attention from a wide range of people, encouraging them to visit Hiroshima or choose it as a partner.

Based on these perspectives, we will strive to make the Hiroshima Summit a great success by hosting it in such a way that the leaders and delegations of participating countries, as well as many other visitors, feel glad to have come to Hiroshima. Furthermore, we would also like to make the residents of the City of Hiroshima and Hiroshima Prefecture, who will welcome the visitors, feel pleased that the Summit has been held in Hiroshima.

In order to achieve this goal, we will implement prefecture-wide initiatives to hold the Summit on the basis of the following five pillars.

2. Basic policy

(1) We aim to hold the Summit in a safe, secure and smooth manner. (Supporting the operation of the Summit)
Managing the coordination with relevant ministries and agencies, the police, medical institutions, and other related organizations, we will provide prefecture-wide support to ensure an environment where the Summit can be operated safely, securely, and smoothly, including initiatives against the COIVID 19 pandemic.

(2) We will strive to enable visitors to Hiroshima to experience the uniqueness of Hiroshima, which is the pride of everyone living in Hiroshima City and Prefecture. (Hospitality)
We will at first build momentum by heartily welcoming the Summit in the Prefecture. Then, during the period of the Summit, we will provide the leaders of the countries participating in the Summit, their related parties, domestic and foreign media, and those who will visit Hiroshima on this occasion with the unique hospitality of Hiroshima in line with the principles of the SDGs. To this end, we will invite a wide range of entities in Hiroshima, including local governments of cities and towns, economic organizations, and those involved in the Summit, to cooperate in enabling these visitors to experience both the charms that Hiroshima offers, such as extraordinary attractions and sites, and ordinary life of people to turn them all into Hiroshima fans.

(3) We will disseminate the spirit of Hiroshima to the world. (Disseminating information about peace)
By providing many people visiting Hiroshima from all over the world, including leaders of various countries and the press, with an opportunity to directly experience the reality of the atomic bombing, we will encourage them to enhance their understanding of the horror of nuclear weapons. At the same time, we will disseminate the spirit of Hiroshima, which seeks a peaceful world free from nuclear arms, to the world.
Moreover, we will deliver a message of prosperity through peace, which can only be sent by Hiroshima since it has made a remarkable recovery from the devastation of the atomic bombing.

(4) We will communicate to the world the appeal of Hiroshima, which has been refined by the citizens of Hiroshima City and Prefecture. (Communicating the appeal of Hiroshima)
We will communicate a wide variety of information globally on Hiroshima’s appeal, which has been built over a long time by our ancestors. Its appeal includes not only two World Heritage sites and one World Intangible Cultural Heritage site but also flourishing industries, many sports and cultural events, diverse and delicious food assets of the mountains and seas, and a culture where traditions, such as kagura dance, have become fused with the rich nature.

(5) We will link the results of the Summit to the future. (Promoting youth participation in events leading to post-summit activities)
We will help young people, who will lead the future, cultivate global awareness and a daring spirit by providing them with opportunities to participate in various initiatives related to the Summit, where G7 leaders will engage in dialogue on important issues facing the international community. In addition, by encouraging young people who have deepened their interest in and understanding of international issues to act voluntarily as future leaders of Hiroshima, we will link the results of the Summit to the future.
