Manners on public transportation

Please keep in mind the following points when riding a train or bus.

・When a train or bus arrives, wait in line by the door for people to get off before you get on. Make sure to board by following the person in front of you.

・It is dangerous to rush onto the train or bus just before departure. Please allow plenty of time to get on board.

・Refrain from talking in a loud voice or talking on your mobile phone. Such actions may annoy those around you.

Furthermore, please follow the request by transportation companies to take measures against infectious diseases, such as wearing a mask.

・The backpack carried on your back may hit the person behind you. When it is crowded, be sure to carry it in front of your body.

・When crowded, put your luggage on your lap or at your feet, not on the seat next to you.

・Yield priority seats to the elderly, people with physical disabilities, expectant mothers, and other passengers who need a seat.

Traffic rules

In Japan, pedestrians walk on the right side of the road while cars and bicycles drive on the left.

Obey the traffic lights when walking on the road.

(At pedestrian traffic lights, the green light indicates that pedestrians can proceed to cross the road while the red light indicates that they must not cross the road.  When the green light flashes, do not start crossing the road.  If you have already started crossing, continue walking quickly to the other side or stop crossing and go back.)

Public bathrooms in Japan

There are public bathrooms in various places, such as parks, stations, and shops, which can be used basically free of charge.

Toilet paper dissolves in water, so flush it away after use.

Please do not flush anything other than toilet paper to prevent toilet clogging.

Some bathrooms are equipped with warm-water washing toilet seats.

Tap water in Japan

Tap water in Japan is safe and drinkable as it is.

Moreover, drinking water can be purchased at supermarkets, convenience stores, vending machines and many other locations.

Smoking on the street

In Hiroshima City, areas deemed particularly requiring prevention of acts of causing harm to others through smoking have been designated as smoking-restricted areas. In such areas, smoking is prohibited at outdoor public places unless the administrator of the venue has installed ashtrays.

In the City center, the following areas have been designated as smoking-restricted areas: the area around Hiroshima Station, Kamiya-cho/Hacchobori, the area around Hiroshima Castle, Chuo (Central) Park, and Peace Park. We ask you to be careful where you smoke.

When you smoke outside the smoking-restricted areas, use a portable ashtray to collect your cigarette butts. Additionally, we request you refrain from smoking while walking. Such an action is extremely dangerous as the burning tip of your cigarette may harm other people around you.

Littering

Do not litter roads with cans, cigarette butts, or other trash. Dispose of them properly in a trash bin.

Tips and consumption tax

Tipping is not required in Japan. However, some restaurants may charge a service charge.

Currently, the consumption tax is 10%. (The consumption tax is 8% for food and beverages excluding alcoholic beverages and eating out.)

Fee for plastic bags

In Japan, a fee is charged for plastic shopping bags to curb the excessive use of plastics.

If you request a plastic shopping bag at a store, you may be charged a fee in addition to the price of your purchased items.

We appreciate your cooperation in reducing the use of plastics by using your own bag on a daily basis.
